Houseboat fiberglass walls
What is the difference in construction technique that allows the outside walls of some boats to be smooth while others show the fiberglass fibers.

It's the type fiberglass cloth used in lay-up. The smooth looking walls are unidirectional glass cloth. Pros - smooth and shiney. Paint and vinyl
look slicker. Cons - strength. The rough finished walls are built with biaxial mat. Just the oposite...they're strong, impact and heat resistant,
but not so sexy. I'm partial to the biaxial. My wife says I'm a function over form guy. Both can look great with regular buffing and waxing.

Smooth is Gelcoat and other is filon
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face . . . When you push them down a flight of
stairs!!!

I read some articles on filon (some related to RV's) and they all said that filon was much harder to maintain but less expensive than gel coat. But
a couple of sites referred to gel-coated filon. I am easily confused and this has done it.
