Taxidermist needed?

My son and his friends have scheduled a fishing trip with a guide in April. He is very optimistic that he will catch that trophy Striper. He would like to know if there is a good taxidermist in the area of Indian Hills/Alligator II.
If he caught a fish on Saturday but didn't go home until Monday and kept it on ice would it deteriorate to the point you couldn't use it?

I don't know of any taxidermists down that way...but as to your question regarding whether the fish will "go bad" after laying on ice for a couple of days, the answer is no, so long as it's burried deep in the ice. I caught a wall mounter in July of 09, caught it on a Friday, headed back home to Louisville on Friday evening, got a couple of old bath towels and wet them down real good, wrapped the fish up real nice, and stuck it in the freezer until Monday. Monday afternoon I took it to the taxidermist and he kept it for several months, I think I got it back from him in late October. I know the taxidermy process takes a long time, I'm not sure if he had that much business or if it actually took that long or maybe it was a combination of the two. At any rate HIS price was $16.00 dollars per inch. There might be other taxidermist who are less expensive but I was more concerned about quality instead of costs because for me it was a fish of a life time and I wanted it done right.

Good luck!

Let me know when he will be there. I will be down several times in April. I can pick the fish up and deliver it back to you in 6-8 weeks.

I have had this problem. I was down for a weeklong trip. Although I am grateful for the trophy catch, I almost had to cut the trip short to keep my fish from going bad. I tried to keep it on ice, but I didn’t have a cooler big enough to hold the fish. I had to take it into the cellar of the house and pile ice around it. This was not going to be enough. Pricing out one of those huge insulated chests found that it costs as much as getting the fish mounted. I couldn’t find anyone with a freezer large enough either (needed a chest or walk-in). I contacted several marinas to get a lead on a taxidermist. Each marina referred me to a guide that worked out of their various facilities. I was recommended to not take it to any local taxidermist by every single guide I spoke with. All of them gave me names and numbers, but the closest one was out of Lexington and I was still going to have to take it there. With that trip I would probably just continue on home. As it turned out I was able to contact a guide that I had met years before, he said he had a “guy” that came from Indiana every month to pick up his customers fish to mount. He had a chest/locker freezer. He took in my fish as if I had been a customer and was to get his “guy” to do the work. A year later he calls and says his “guy” went out of business and he still has my fish. I went down and picked it up and brought it back to Louisville and I am presently getting it mounted here. So, I pose the same question. Where in the LC area can one take a fish to get mounted or to put in a freezer until it can be mounted in the event that you don’t wish to leave the area for a few days? Although my chances of ever catching another whopper are slim, you never know! This would be good info to have in your pocket. Thanks.

Does anyone know that best way to keep a fish until you can get it to the Taxidermist?

Several years ago I caught a large mouth wall hanger and the taxidermist that I had mount it told me to lay the fish flat and wrap it in a wet towel then freeze it towel and all. This was several years ago , and the method may have changed with new technology so I would contact the taxidermist that I planed to use and ask what he preferred. Hope this helps.

I was instructed to loosly wrap it in black plastic garbage bags, then loosly tape arount it. I did this, it was in a freezer for about a year and a half. When I took it to the taxidermist they got it out of the bags and ran water over it to check it out and they said it look fine, no freezer burn etc. If there is a best method I too would like to know.

One last word of advice...take plenty of pictures of the fish, up close, far away, front, back, top, bottom, both sides, up side down, you name it....the pictures will come in handy for the taxidermist to see when once he starts painting it, etc...

The fish needs to be as wet as possible before freezing. You can put it in a VERY wet towel and then into a plastic garbage bag, or just a garbage bag. The wet towel will freeze and serve as a cast to help protect the fins.

If you cant freeze the same day, keep it on ice.;)
