One must careful about posting rumors on here.
But I also heard that Stardust could be possibly moving their operation. Once again just a rumor!

You are absolutely correct about rumors barryt. The only time I post things as "rumor" is usually when the source would rather not be named and/or the certainty of the statement has not been confirmed.

I sure hope Stardust is not moving real soon! My boat is scheduled to be moved to their shop this Friday. It won't be done until latter part of April. :)

NHA.... I guess everybody is very much entitled to their opinion, so here goes mine. Out of all the boats there, I thought the Destination one was the cheapest looking boats I have ever seen, inside and out. The paneling inside was so thin you could push it in and out and it looked like cheap wallpaper. There was alot of other things too but I cant remember them all. Everything about it looked bad.....IMHO.

I have to agree with Randy, looked like a camper and even had the cheap camper smell. I can't believe that John S can even show his face around after all the people he has taken for a ride. I sat in our booth and watched him talking to people all weekend. HE HAS NO CONSCIENCE

WaterWings......what are you having done to yours? Was the estimate fairly reasonable? Just wondering...we were considering maybe moving up but after seeing prices this past weekend at the show, maybe keeping what we have with some modifications may be the way to go.

You are mistaken, Mr. Graber, who was at the show is still president of Destination. I believe it is true however that John did have input on the design of the new hull that they used on the bigger boat that they had at the show.

Bim you maybe sorry you asked.:D Thinking of doing a complete expose' on the refurbishing of old houseboats.
Anyway, I did a lot of research and may post some of it one day but to answer your questions:
1) Complete paint on outside with new graphics
2) Complete hull painted white with bottom done black (like their showboat)
3) roof gel coated
4) both out drives serviced completely
5) 2 new type II heads
6) new belts, hoses, plugs on engines and generator
7) new ceilings/soffits on both front and rear decks with lighting upgrade
8) swim platform carpet removed and a teak looking vinyl installed
9) bottom canvas on rails removed and enclosed with durabond/alumabond??
10) new granite counter tops
11) hopefully a new bar on top
12) lots of little things too numerous to mention

I plan to do my self with some family help:
1) new wood floors throughout with tile in kitchen and bath
2) all new appliances in kitchen
3) new stereo and entertainment systems with flat screen tv.
4) etc. etc etc

Bim to answer your question about the cost...its not cheap, but a lot cheaper than my boat ($150,000)and borrowing at least another $250,000 for a new one. :o
So far, other than some unforeseen delays in getting the boat to the shop, Stardust has been extremely easy to work with and very accommodating. Prices are fair and they have been doing a lot of refurbishing lately. They have done some beautiful jobs and the few I've seen are better than new when done.
Its all pros and very few cons... but the one big con is you will not get your investment back. Put 100,000 into your old boat and... bottom line you still have an old boat. Your not going to increase the value by the same amount.

Its the way to go for me and more and more folks are re-doing their old houseboats. Might post more on it later.

When paying 100s of thousands of $$$$ for a boat, some of the more important things are: assistance with design and equipment choice to help determine what you want, it is of very high quality, and in my opinion the on going service provided by the manufacturer could be the deal breaker when it comes to buying or not buying from that company. That probably is the reason the houseboat manufacturers that are in business today are still in business, SERVICE with knowlege and a smile. As for the boats at the show I liked the Thoroghbreds then the Stardust. On a side note, I was impressed with the quality of construction on that Leisure Kraft pontoon that was shown.

Wow, that's quite a list of work to be done! How old is your boat? Thanks for the info, some of the items on your list would be on mine as well.

Bim... my boat is a 1991 18x83 Stardust and is kind of a perfect boat for refurbishing. Its just the right size and fit for my little family and yet its still worth putting some money into it because we use it a lot. Fits our needs perfectly but it was at the point were it was going to need some serious work.
Looked at 2-3 year old used boats and quickly found they are almost as much as new boats without the sales tax. Older than that and I might as well keep what I got. New was just too much to borrow for a non- revenue producing asset and making payments on it for the next 20 years at this stage in my life did not make sense.

Like I said I'm thinking about posting a thread on here about the whole ordeal but not sure there's that much interest in fixing up old boats.

Yes it was. Now its kinda small actually. :D
I was told by the previous owner it was one of the first 18 wides Stardust made. It was loaded for its time too. With a bow thruster, inverter, back up camera, etc.

Funny thing Stardust had a picture of her in the lobby for many years. I assumed it was long gone. Went into one of the offices there recently and there was the picture of her still on the wall. :)

WaterWings sounds like a lot of work and I am sure it wasnt cheap. We have toy'd with the thought of having ours pulled and re done. I have a older Jamestowner 16x62 that I would love to have the inside totally redone. We have bunks and a small cuddy that we made but now the boy is out growing the cuddy. I would love to have the inside redone and cuddys put in like t was a new boat. I am afraid to ask what that would cost. We are probably better off selling and buying a used boat. THe thing is that all mechanics on my boat are fairly new so if I buy used I may not get as good as I got mechanically.

Actually, I think I did :D

John Gregory the GM, after 19 years, knew who the previous owner was and even knew the production number of the boat. He even still had the plans drawings and notes from 19 years ago. Blew me away.

MagicMountain if the boat size is right for you... I say go for it. Everything was fine on my boat too but time caught up with me on a few things, like outdrives, gelcoat and then the better half said time for some interior decorating. "In for a penny in for a pound" type thing.

OK, I will probably do a little thread with pictures of her before and after. Stay tuned to LC.com. :)

Ksea I thought I saw a booth for them but I don't remember seeing a boat unless it was toward the back near the Gibson. I missed going through a few boats back on that side.

Well there goes $6,000.00 of WW's hard earned money up the ramp at Conley (well, not that hard earned but hard for me).:( That's just the transportation cost from Conley to Monticello and back again when done. :(

They came and got her today since it would have been overtime to take her out on a Friday. They work 4- 10 hours days and to work on Friday would have been overtime.

$6,000 from Conley to Monticello? Who moved it.

I was quoted (rough estimate) $4000 - $4500 by a vendor at the Expo to move one from LC to DH.

Stardust was in charge of the move Doc, I assume it was their people. It would have been a lot higher but Conley does not charge the usual ramp fee of major bucks if you are a slip holder. That's all that saved me. Again, thats round trip to their shop and back to the lake when done.

1997 I paid $11,000 to go from LFM to Cave Run Lake (Ricky Lee I think was his name). 2005 I paid $9,000 for the same move back to LC and would gladly have given more for a more professional job. The last guys messed a lot of things up.

That sounds very cheap to me. I would definitely get it in writing.

Saw you at the show and your booth was busy every time I walked by. Hope you did well.

If LC means Lake Cumberland and DH means Dale Hollow, I would assume you are getting a discount for having good taste.
