1934 article describing huge cave in Wayne County

I have added another historical article in the SPECIAL FEATURES section of this web site. This is a lengthy article describing a trip in 1933 into deepest Wayne County to explore a huge cave system. It is called in the article Winn Cave, and from the description sounds like a very extensive cave. This rare article also describes the trip out into the deep mountainous countryside and is -- to me -- a fascinating description of not only the cave but the times over 70 years ago as well.

I've added some extra explanation and comment at the beginning of the posted article, which can be found at the following link.

The SPECIAL FEATURES section can be accessed from the lakecumberland.com home page.

Great article! The authors descriptive words traveling down the road makes you feel as though you are there. The two mules all dressed up ready to take Sam and Duke to go pick up sweathearts for a date is awesome!

Gotta kick out this insert:

The City Council has demanded that we rigidly enforce the laws against speeding, reckless driving, driving without mufflers and bad parking; and this is due notice to one and all to obey these ordinances and laws, or we will be compelled to make arrests we do not wish to make.

1934? This could actually be in the newspaper today! :D

Was this cave ever opened to the public as described in the article? Is it open now?

No, it became mostly forgotten. I understand that it was explored and documented, and is of considerable size. I don't believe another entrance to the same cave was found in Tennessee, however.

Do you know what they now call Castle Rock Mountain? I cannot find that on any maps.

Great read cumberline! Someone sure has their own little piece of heaven now. Too bad it is not open now. Sure sounds like a tourist attraction to me.

Welcome to the forum
There are a lot of caves in Kentucky.
Most of them are not on any public maps, too many vandals, too much graffiti, trash ect. This particular cave does still exist today(its been there for a couple hundred thousand years).
If you are interested in caving near the lake you should contact some one from a local grotto(cave club)
I see that you are from Xenia oh,,,,its your lucky day, there is a great group of caver's in Dayton,Oh. contact them here::http://www.dugcaves.com/
AND,,caves can be very dangerous places,,,,LOTS of ways to die,,,NOT many ways out
,Never Cave Alone.
